Changing your Honda Fury 1300’s oil and filter yourself is actually pretty easy, and, doing it yourself will save you a lot of money. In this post (and the video below), I’ll walk you through the whole oil and filter change procedure.
We’ll go through the steps exactly as they’re outlined thing exactly how Honda says to do it, straight from the factory service manual.
🛠️ What You’ll Need
Here’s the basic list:
- 17mm socket or wrench
- Torque wrench
- Oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute type—perfect fit)
- Oil filter
- 3.7L of 10W-40 motorcycle-specific oil
- New crush washers (optional, but smart)
- Low profile oil drain pan
- Some rags or paper towels
Optional but helpful: a wheel chock or a friend to help keep the bike upright.

If you’re more of a reader than a watcher, here’s a quick play-by-play of what happens in the video:
Warm up the engine: Run the bike for 2–3 minutes to thin the oil, then let it cool down for a few minutes so you don’t burn yourself.
Check current oil level: Do this so you’ll know if you’ve been burning or leaking oil. Proper technique shown in the video.

Remove both drain bolts: Bolts, plural, because the Fury has two. See video.
Remove the oil filter: I use this specific oil filter wrench which fits the Fury’s filter perfectly.

Let everything drain: Now’s a good time to take your dog for a walk, or go find a dog to adopt if you don’t have a dog.
Inspect the drain bolts: Check for metal bits and clean them off.
Install new crush washers: You can reuse your old ones if they still look brand new.

Reinstall drain bolts and torque to spec: Even a cheap torque wrench is probably more accurate than any of us. Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
Prep and install new oil filter: Make sure to lube the oil filter’s o-ring before installing it, then torque to 26 Nm (19 ft-lbs).

Add 3.7L of 10W-40 motorcycle oil: I prefer to use a full synthetic oil for best performance.
Run the engine and recheck your oil level: If everything’s solid, you’re good to go!

👀 Tips That’ll Save You Time and Headaches
Don’t overtighten the drain bolts. A lot of people strip their engine cases that way.
Don’t forget to lube your new oil filter’s O-ring. A lot of people make life difficult for themselves the next time the change their filter because they skipped this step.
Always double-check that each of the old crush washers actually came off with the drain plugs. Sometimes they get stuck to the engine case.
Use motorcycle-specific oil, and make sure it’s the right viscosity. If you’re not sure what to get just use my links above.
You might need to lean the bike to one side to reach certain bolts, and other parts of the job need to be done with the Fury upright, so it might be best to do this oil change with a friend.
